Michael Conforto is here. Michael Cuddyer is on the DL.
This is a move that HAD to happen. With Cuddyer going on the DL (something that should’ve happened a week ago) my good friend Sandy (Alderson) had no choice but to give in to the fans screaming.
Well, now he’s free. Is he going to save the season? Absolutely not. Is he going to turn around this joke of a lineup? Absolutely not. Is he even going to out-produce Michael Cuddyer, who was batting .250 before going down? Probably not. However, what I can guarantee will happen is he’ll bat higher than .170 over the next 15 days, which is what his teammates John Mayberry, Kirk Niewen-I can’t spell his name- and Eric Campbell are hitting under.
The Mets still have to make a move to get a big bat before the deadline, this isn’t enough, we all know that. But, that doesn’t mean we can’t get excited. It’s fun when a prospect gets called up, especially one who’s as highly regarded as Conforto. But listen, we have to lower our expectations for what this guy is going to do this year. We’ve been spoiled by the instant impacts of Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard and Steven Matz, but Sandy said it, most prospects struggle when they’re called up to the big leagues. You don’t have to look very far to see that. Travis d’Arnaud was demoted last year remember? Kevin Plawecki was flirting with the mendoza line for most of this season before he turned it around lately. Dilson Herrera struggled in his stint this year and he’s back in triple-A tearing it up. It takes hitters time to adjust, no matter what level they’re moving up to.
One day Michael Conforto will be a very good hitter. He has the potential to be a 20-25 home run guy. He can anchor this outfield for a long time. He’s not going to do it tonight, he’s not going to do it tomorrow or probably even this year. But this is the start of the Michael Conforto era, and I’m friggin pumped.
