Your official Rags Midway break blog

Ahhhh so here we are midway through the season. Has it felt like 5 years to anybody else too? This season has been an absolute roller caster ride. One minute half our roster is hurt the next we’re closer to the bottom of the league than the top, then Lundqvist just starts dying on the Throne like Prince Joffrey (whoops spoiler). There was talk of blowing up the entire team, letting our guys walk and trading away guys like Staal and Talbot and Stepan and starting at square one. Then December came and we just couldn’t lose. It’s like we forgot the season started until December 6th. So I honestly have no god damn clue how I’m going to do these grades. Grover is out there writing about the isles and can just throw A’s everywhere while I’m stuck deciding what the hell actually went on this season to this point. My mind is a pretzel within a pretzel right now. Besides Rick Nash, I’m not sure how to grade anybody. Oh well, I guess I’ll give it a shot:

Grades:

Rick Nash: A+++++++++

rick-nash

Statline: 43 Points, 28 Goals, 15 Assists, +/- 18

Rick Nash, sooooooooo hot right now, Rick Nash. He’s maybe the only guy on this team who I can absolutely, positively say has been great all year. He’s  tied for first in the NHL in goals with 28 and never fails to do something productive when he’s on the ice. Rick Nash is the Rangers rock. Give the man the puck and watch him go

Martin St. Louis: A

Statline: 36 Points, 14 Goals, 22 Assists, +/-  +5

St. Louis has quietly been the second best player on this team this year. He’s deadly on the power play and is still at almost 40 years old one of the best snipers in the league. He brings a Veteran presence to the locker room as well which is a super underrated part of his game.

Derick Brassard: A-

Brassard_D_0508_hatbig2

Statline: 35 Points, 12 Goals, 13 assists, +/-  +4

Has been a very good 1st line Center for us this season at a position where we really havn’t had a lot of depth. After Stepan went down Brassard and Moore were our only true Centers. When he’s at his best is when he wins faceoffs and creates absolute chaos in front of the net. He’s created many goals for the Rangers by just planting himself in front of the goalie.

Derek Stepan: B-

Stepan_D_0617_Ins3

Statline: 32 Points, 8 Goals, 24 Assists, +/-  +13

Since he’s come back front his leg injury that kept him out for most of the first month and a half of the season, he’s been nothing but great for the Rangers. But it was the fact that he was injured for so long that bumps his letter grade to this. You can’t skip class for 6 weeks without losing letter grades no matter how smart you are, so even though he’s been great on the ice this season, it doesn’t change the fact that he was off it for a large chunk of it.

Chris Kreider: B

b45d7ab0377b29844f1dab09e9084931

Statline: 24 Pointss, 10 Goals, 14 Assists, +/-  +12

Kreider came out the gate flaming hot, and it seemed to be carrying over from the playoffs last season. He was expected to make a big leap this year and become one of the best players on this team and while he still has the oppportunity to do that, there was a time in the season where he was completely lost on the ice. For about a month in mid november to the end of December Kreider couldn’t get anything going. But he’s settled back in and he’s going to be a key player in the second half for the Rags.

Mats Zuccarello: B+

the resemblance is uncanny
the resemblance is uncanny

Statline: 23 Points, 7 Goals, 16 Assists, +/-

Zuuuuuuuuuuccs. Zuccarello is one of my favorite guys on this teams and I’m not alone. Zuucs always seems to be making plays but what is so great about him is the energy he brings to the squad. He’s a guy who in a blink of an eye can zip up ice but will bust his ass coming back. Sometimes what might be better for him is to just slow down, because going 200 mph all the time does cause the occasional mistake, but overall a good first half from Matts.

Each Line Grades:

1st line: A

LW C RW
Rick Nash
Rick Nash
Derick Brassard
Derick Brassard
Mats Zuccarello
Mats Zuccarello

Rick Nash has been out of his god damn mind. Derick Brassard has been a fantastic Center and Zuccs is the jolt of energy this team always needs.

2nd line: B+

Chris Kreider
Chris Kreider
Derek Stepan
Derek Stepan
Martin St. Louis
Martin St. Louis

This line has been a constant mismatch of people but this combo is the best one we can put out. Whether it was injuries or inconsistant play, this line shifted a lot. But coming into the break they were playing fantastic and this is a grade for when they were playing at their best.

3rd line: C

Carl Hagelin
Carl Hagelin
Kevin Hayes
Kevin Hayes
Jesper Fast
Jesper Fast

Kevin Hayes has been awesome. He’s the playmaker that we thought he was going to be when he came here. But the problem lies in the people they put on the outside. This line is pivotal because with the inconsistent play they’ve been putting out there it makes the Rangers a very top heavy team and when that happens it puts  wayyyy too much pressure on Nash and St. Louis to make things happen.

4th line: B+

J.T. Miller
J.T. Miller
Dominic Moore
Dominic Moore
Lee Stempniak
Lee Stempniak

This has been an awesome line for us. Stempniak and Moore do a great job as defensive forwards. Moore has stepped up into the spot that Boyle held down before he bolted to Tampa Bay (pun intended). J.T. Miller has been our best surprise among the young guys. I said before the year that we would need the young guys to help replace the key personel we lost and J.T. Miller and Jesper Fast have stepped up.

1st Defense: B-

Defensive Pairings
Ryan McDonagh
Ryan McDonagh
Dan Girardi
Dan Girardi

When they’ve been on the ice together they’ve been great. That’s probably the 50th time I’ve written that sentence. Stay healthy and this works. When they’re off the ice it doesn’t work. Simple as that

2nd defense: B

Marc Staal
Marc Staal
Dan Boyle
Dan Boyle

Ugghhhh I don’t wanna write again that these guys just have to stay healthy. If I didn’t just wanna push this blog out I’d look up how many games we’ve had with all our defensemen and without them. Boyle’s been great on the powerplay and Staal just got paid so all is good on the 2nd line though

3rd defense: A

Kevin Klein
Kevin Klein
Matt Hunwick
Matt Hunwick

Kevin Klein has been a MONSTER up to this point. He’s already in the first half of the season matched his goal total for his entire career (8). He filled in when all of our guys were going down and was spectacular. Kevin Klein has been the Rangers hero thus far.

Goalies:

Goalies
Henrik Lundqvist

Cameron Talbot

Henrik: B-

Soooo inconsistant. When he’s been good he’s been lights out, but when he’s been bad he’s been baaaaaad. The King will put it together though, I ain’t worried.

Talbot: B+

Best backup in the league. I think he’d start on some teams in this league but we just locked him up here so he’ll be backing up Lundqvist for the foreseeable future.

Ok so if you’re still reading up to this point well then thanks. Unless you’re Rain Man this probably took you a liiiittle longer then a minute. Whatever. Hoped you like it. Big game to open the second half against the Islanders. The march to te playoffs is upon us. Go Blueshirts!!!
