New York Daily News– Former Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum will accept a front office executive position with the Dolphins, though he will still represent Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn through his head coaching candidacy, according to sources.
Tannenbaum had been a consultant for the Dolphins in addition to being a coaching agent. He represents Quinn, who is one of the hottest head coaching candidates on the market. The jets interviewed Quinn last weekend.
The former Jets GM was began consulting with the Dolphins last August, with the team indicating at the time that he would work on a “variety of projects involving innovation, analytics and sports science.”
Tannenbaum was the Jets’ general manager from 2006-2012. Under Tannenbaum, the team went to back-to-back AFC Championship Games in 2009 and 2010, though they underwent a decline afterwards that they have yet to recover from. Tannenbaum was fired on January 2, 2013.
I’m happy for Tanny. He’s a good guy. He was a good GM for 7 years with us. We went to the playoffs 3 of those years and went to 2 AFC championship games. Sure, he ended up screwing us in the end when he put us in salary cap hell and we had to bring in Hurricane Idzik. But overall Tannenbaum is a good exec. He knows how to negotiate deals and is great at getting bargain players. He got Santonio Holmes for a 5th round draft pick, drafted Darrell Revis, Muhammad Wilkerson, D’brickashaw Ferguson, Nick Mangold and David Harris. Almost everybody in the Jets organization has ties to Mike Tannenbaum. Even our new possible head coach Dan Quinn is represented by Tannenbaum. I made the title of this blog half jokingly, but I would keep one eye open on the Dolphins. Tanny is a highly respected exec in this league who would love nothing more than to stick it to the Jets twice a year.
