Oh baby! St. John’s is off to a little bit of a start. They climbed into the AP Top 25 this week at #24. Not too shabby. It’s a start. Only a matter of time until they’re cutting down the nets.
Stevie Lavin got dressed in his finest suit, put on his white Air Force 1s, got down into a nice crouching position and did some damn recruiting. I have been critical of Lavin’s playcalling and game management in the past, but there is no denying that he is a great recruiting coach. He has brought in kids that can play ball, and has put the team in a great position moving forward, with a lot of room for improvement.
The Johnnies are off to a 6-1 start, with convincing wins over Minnesota and Syracuse. Say what you will about Syracuse’s team this year, but a win at the Carrier Dome is a win at the Carrier Dome. Their only loss came in a closely contested game against #9 Gonzaga. The team is set to begin a home stand on Wednesday that doesn’t end until Big East conference play begins on New Year’s Eve.
The team has been led offensively by guards D’Angelo Harrison (18.4 PPG) and Rysheed Jordan (15.3 PPG). Can D’Angelo Harrison ball? I don’t know. Take a look at him. You tell me.
The boards have been dominated by Chris Obekpa. The junior forward is picking up 9.6 rebounds per game and 3.9 blocks per game. Oh, and he’s sporting the freshest shorts in all of NCAA Men’s Division 1 Basketball.
The only thing that I don’t like about this team is the blue uniforms. What’s the deal with that? We’re the Red Storm. Red is a very crucial part of that. Bring back Mullin’s reds and be done with it.
P.S. This just looks right.
