What a weird week. Everyone’s been slumping. The Islanders were slumping, falling to 6-5 heading into last nights game against the Ducks. Johnny Tavares was slumping, scoring only 3 points in his last 7 games. I’ve been slumping, unable to get to the blog due to illness/work/my rotator cuff is still torn from three years ago. But I’m not a man for excuses. And last night we busted the slump and the sun shined just a little bit brighter this morning.
John Tavares had a big time comeback game, scoring two goals, including the overtime winner to beat the Ducks in Anaheim last night. Did we just beat the best team in hockey? Yes. Were Perry and Getzlaf out with the flu? Maybe. But those are just details, and as I mentioned before, I’m not an excuse guy. Kyle Okposo scored the other goal for the Isles. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Aside from Johnny, the real hero of this game was Jaroslav Halak. Halak had a huge game for the Isles, who have struggled in the goaltending department so far this season. Jaro saved 32 pucks on 34 shots (.941 save %). He stood on his head for the majority of the game, making some incredible saves. A much needed strong performance from the Isles’ main threat between the pipes.
Next game is tonight as the Isles continue the west coast road trip and take on the Kings in Los Angeles. I’m not worried a bit. If the Rags can win a game against the Kings in the Stanley Cup, there’s no reason the Isles can’t hang 5 on the defending champions.
P.S. Cal Clutterbuck’s mustache thinks it’s playoff time. No quit in that facial hair. Love the passion this early in the season.
